What’s the difference between a Penalty Charge Notice and a Fixed Penalty Notice UK
A Penalty Charge Notice is issued by local authorities for parking or traffic-related offences, such as parking in a restricted area, driving in a bus lane, or failing to pay the London Congestion Charge. The penalty amount varies depending on the offence and the location. The penalty can be appealed, but if the appeal is unsuccessful, the penalty must be paid within a certain time frame, usually 28 days.
On the other hand, a Fixed Penalty Notice is issued by the police for minor criminal offences, such as littering, speeding, or minor traffic offences. The penalty amount is fixed at £100 or £200, depending on the offence, and must be paid within 28 days. If the offender accepts the penalty and pays it within the time limit, no further action will be taken. However, if they fail to pay or contest the penalty, they may be prosecuted in court. So, the key difference between a Penalty Charge Notice and a Fixed Penalty Notice is that a PCN is issued by local authorities for parking or traffic-related offences, while an FPN is issued by the police for minor criminal offences.
